On Friday, September 27th, the CopelandBEC team collaborated with Habitat for Humanity to work on a historic barn conversion in Westford, MA. We helped transform a late 1800s barn into two modern 3-bedroom condominium units. Our team took on several key structural tasks to ensure the building’s safety and longevity.

Key Structural Contributions
At CopelandBEC, we took responsibility for several critical tasks, including:
- Excavating Foundation Footings and Structural Posts: We reinforced the barn’s foundation by excavating and adding strong footings and posts.
- Building and Installing Strong Backs: Our team constructed and installed strong backs to support the barn’s structure and ensure stability.
- Preparing the Floor for New Ledgers: We prepared the floor for new ledgers, which are crucial for distributing the building’s weight and ensuring its durability.
- Removing Old Wooden Support Beams: We safely removed deteriorated wood beams to improve the structure’s integrity and prevent future issues.
A Collaborative Effort
This project was a rewarding experience. Working with Habitat for Humanity allowed us to preserve the barn’s historical character while making it fit for modern living. Our team’s contributions helped ensure the transformation was both safe and long-lasting.
We are proud to have played a part in this unique barn conversion. Not only did it preserve a piece of local history, but it also created much-needed housing. For more information about Habitat for Humanity and how you can contribute, visit their site here.
